Spartans Bow Out of CAC Tournament
SALISBURY, MD – The York College softball team had their stay in the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament come to a close with a pair of losses on Friday at top-seeded Salisbury University.
The Spartans dropped a 12-0 decision to the #3 ranked Sea Gulls before falling to Mary Washington, the third seed in the tournament, 8-0 in six innings in their second game.
York falls to 11-30 overall with two games remaining on their 2013 schedule.
Game one saw the Spartans keep it close in the opening three innings as the nationally ranked Gulls led just 2-0 through the three innings. That changed quickly in the bottom of the fourth as Salisbury scored 10 runs on just four hits with two Spartan errors, blowing the game wide open.
The only drama in game after the big Sea Gull inning was whether the Spartans would have anyone reach base. The Spartans did not have a runner reach in the fifth as Salisbury ace Rachel Johnson completed the perfect game with a pair of strikeouts in the fifth and final inning. It is the second time this season that Johnson has held the Spartans without a hit in a game.
Johnson improves to 21-1 overall as she struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced in the game.
Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) suffered the loss as she tossed 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on three hits with three walks and a hit batter.
Carly Read had the big game for Salisbury as she was 1-for-2 with three RBI and two run scored including her second home run of the year, a two run shot in the second. Harley Hill added a hit, two RBI and a run scored for the Gulls.
In the nightcap, the Eagles tallied a run in the second and four runs in the third to take the early lead. The Spartans continued to struggle offensively as they couldn't get going against Eagle starter Annie Blaine.
Mary Washington ended the game with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule.
Blaine earned the win as she tossed six shutout innings, scattering two Spartan singles. She struck out one and walked another.
Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) tossed 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk as she falls to 8-15 overall. Freshman Payton Hill (Stauton, Va./Westfield) made her collegiate pitching debut in the loss as she allowed two runs on six hits in her two innings of work.
Alex Tenney led the Eagles as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Bireet Chitty also had three hits as seven of the nine Mary Washington hitters had at least one hit with six players having multiple hits. Stephanie Asselanis notched two RBI and a run scored on her first home run of the year.
The Spartans will conclude their 2013 campaign on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to McDaniel College for a non-conference twin bill in Westminster, MD. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
