YORK, Pa. – The York College women's softball team beat Wesley College 8-7 in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon for the final spot into playoffs.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 12-23 overall and secure fourth place in the conference.
The Green and White started out the game with a strong defensive inning and then took advantage of two Wolverine errors in the bottom of the inning. The Spartans scored four runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. Sarah Harris (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) slammed the ball out to right center field for a triple, allowing Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) to record a run. Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) stepped up next with a single to center field, which helped Harris to score. Thanks to a throwing error on a stolen base attempt, Hill registered the Spartans third run of the day. Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded the final run of the inning after the Wesley center fielder dropped a pop fly hit by Vanessa Mendez (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).
Wesley cut the Spartan lead to two in the top of the second. York answered with a run in the bottom of the same inning. This time, Kayleen Bell (Herndon, Va./Westfield) reached home after a wild pitch.
Wesley scored two runs in the top of the third and fourth innings to take a 6-5 lead. The Spartans came back with two runs, taking back the lead. Harris cracked another big hit through the left side of the field, allowing Aryn Johnston (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Hugel to score runs.
Heading into the top of the fifth, the Wolverines were able to score and tie the game back up with a run off of a fly out to right field. Once again, the Spartans managed to have an answer for the Wolverines. Pinch runner, Jessica Canami (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), scored the game-winning run off a single by Bell.
Despite having bases loaded and finishing the bottom of the sixth with zero runs, the Spartans were able to hold the Wolverines and finish the game on top.
Pacing the Spartans on offense was Harris as she finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored and three RBI's. Bell went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Hugel finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) earned the win in the circle. Levine pitched for 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. Thacker also threw for 1.1 innings in the middle of the game, giving Levine a rest after she was hit in the leg with a line drive.
