Spartans Drop Two Against Bridgewater

YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team fell to Bridgewater College on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The Green and White lost 10-4 in game one and then 9-7 in the nightcap. 

With the losses, the Spartans fall to 9-27 overall and Bridgewater improves to 21-15.

Sarah Harris (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton), Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) and Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) all played in their final regular season home game. 

The Eagles were quick to score in the first inning, getting two runs on three hits and capitalizing on an early Spartan fielding error.

The Spartans were able to cut the Eagles lead to one with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Harris attempted to steal second and was tagged out, but the play allowed Hugel to race home for a run. 

Bridgewater had a big five-run inning the in the top of the third, taking a 7-1 lead. The Eagles recorded two homeruns and took advantage of another Spartan error in the inning. The Eagles followed up with another run in the fourth inning.

The Spartans were able to score one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth. Kayleen Bell (Herndon, Va./Westfield) reached first base on a fielders choice, allowing Cara Rubinaccio (Boonton, N.J./Morris Knolls) to score. Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) slammed a two-run homerun in the fifth to give the Spartans four runs. However, the Green and White still trailed by four. 

The Eagles closed out the game with two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Leading the Bridgewater offense was Kasey Anderson. She finished 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored. Melanie Lamb and Leigh Lam each added three RBI's for the Eagles. 

Pacing the Spartan offense was Hill. She finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored and two RBI's.

Heather Jenkins was the winning pitcher. Jenkins threw for seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. 

Urkuski recorded the loss in the circle for the Green and White. Urkuski started and pitched the first two innings, allowing five runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout. Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) came in for Urkuski in the third inning. She allowed two runs on four hits with one walk in 0.1 innings pitched. Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) closed out the game for the Spartans. Levine pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.  

Game two started out slow offensively for both teams. Bridgewater was the first team to score again. The Eagles registered four runs on three hits in the top of the third. 

Katie Wickert (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill Senior) scored a run for the Spartans in the bottom of the third after Bell was caught stealing.

Bridgewater added three more runs in the next two innings. The Spartans answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Eagle lead to two. Wickert scored again off a center field single from Bell. Rubinaccio scored on the next play after Hugel reached first on a fielders choice. Bell was the final Spartan to score in the inning off of a double from Aryn Johnston (Bowie, Md./Bowie) that traveled down the left field line. 

Despite scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans left three runners on base and could not come from behind for the win.

In game two, the Eagles were led by Brooke Throckmorton as she finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's. Brea Hinegardner also added four RBI's. 

York was lead by Bell who was 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs and one RBI.

Aven Thomas earned the win in the circle for the Eagles. Thomas pitched for six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Brianna Cox pitched for the final inning. She allowed four runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. 

Levine recorded the loss for the Spartans. She pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with two walks and one strikeout. Urkuski finished out the game, allowing four runs on five hits and one strikeout in 1.2 innings pitched.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday at Misericordia for the final doubleheader of the regular season. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
