Spartans Split with Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The York College women's softball team split a doubleheader against Washington College on Friday afternoon. The Spartans led late into the first game, but fell 8-7 in extra innings. In the second game, the Spartans redeemed themselves with a 13-3 victory in five innings.
The Spartans overall record now stands at 9-25 this season, while Washington College is currently 22-12 overall.
In game one, the Shorewomen got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Washington scored two runs on three hits.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the third inning, taking a 4-2 lead. Brooke LaBell (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) singled down the left field line and was later able to score off a pop fly to center field by Sarah Harris (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton). Two batters later, Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) stepped up to the plate to slam a three-run homerun. The Shorewomen cut the Green and White's lead to one with one run in the bottom of the inning.
York opened up the sixth inning with three runs, to take a 7-3 lead late in the game. The Spartans were able to take advantage of a fielding error by Washington. Jessica Canami (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Katie Wickert (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill Senior) both scored. Aryn Johnston (Bowie, Md./Bowie) followed up with a single to centerfield, allowing LaBell to record a run.
Trailing 7-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Shorewomen were able to use two big Spartan errors to tie the game up. Washington scored four runs on four hits, pushing the game into extra innings.
Heading into the eighth inning, the Spartans could not find an offensive answer. Washington stepped up in the bottom of the inning, hitting a single to left center that helped them score the winning run.
Pacing the Spartans in the loss was Thacker. She finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate with one run and three RBI's.
The Shorewomen were led by Lauren Dockrill and Lindsey Glascock. Dockdrill was 2-for-4 and recorded three RBI's, while Glascock scored three runs and went 1-for-2.
Freshman Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) started out in the circle for the Spartans. Levine pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Senior Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) closed out the game and recorded the loss. Urkuski threw for one inning allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout.
Christine Anderson was the winning pitcher for the Shorewomen. Anderson allowed seven runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in eight innings pitched.
Once again, Washington got on the board first in game two. The Shorewomen scored two runs off two Spartan errors in the bottom of inning one.
However, the Spartans were ready to redeem their game one loss. York exploded for six runs in the second inning. Vanessa Mendez (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) started off the inning with a single to left field. Wickert got on after being hit by a pitch and Kayleen Bell (Herndon, Va./Westfield) ripped a single to third base. With bases loaded, LaBell got another big hit up the left side, allowing Mendez to cut the Washington lead to one. Later in the inning, Wickert tied the game up after Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) got a hit. Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Defiance) slammed a double down the right field line, helping the Spartans take a three-run lead. Ashley Chenoweth (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), Ruby and Bell all scored off of Hill's hit. Thacker followed Hill's hit with a single up the middle, allowing Hill to reach home.
Washington would add one run in the bottom of the second inning, but would end up scoreless in the remaining three innings of the game.
The Spartans added two runs in the third inning and then had a big five-run inning in the fourth, helping the Green and White close the game out early.
Pacing the York offense in game two was Ruby as she finished 2-for-3 from the plate with four RBI's and three runs scored. Hill added six RBI's, while Mendez, Wickert and Bell each had two runs.
The Shorewomen were led by Glascock who finished 1-for-3 from the plate with one run scored and one RBI.
Clare Hofstedt recorded the loss for the Shorewomen. Hofstedt pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with two walks. Christine Anderson threw for .1 innings, allowing one hit. Meredith Katona finished out the game. She allowed five runs on five hits in two innings pitched.
Thacker earned the win for the Spartans in the circle. Thacker pitched for 1.1 innings and only allowed one hit.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday at Spartan Stadium for Senior Day against Bridgewater College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
