Spartans Drop a Pair to Messiah

YORK, Pa – The York College women's softball team lost both games in a double header against Messiah College on Monday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans fell to the Falcons 7-1 and then 5-2.

With the loss, the Spartans fall to 4-18 overall and have dropped 10 straight. The Falcons improve their overall record to 15-7. 

In the first game of the day, the Falcons took advantage of two quick Spartan errors to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Messiah added to their lead with a run in the top of the third.

The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the third with one run. This time, it was the Spartans that took advantage of two errors by the Falcons. Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) raced home after a throwing error by the Messiah shortstop off a hit by Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll)

Messiah finished out the game strong, with a three run inning in the top of the seventh. The Spartans had no offensive answer to the Falcons in their final at bat.

York finished the game with four hits. Pacing the Spartans on offense was Urkuski. She was 1-for-3 from the plate with one run. 

In the circle, sophomore Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded the loss. Thacker pitched one inning, allowing three runs on one hit and one strikeout. Freshman Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) finished out the game. Levine threw for six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and one strikeout.

Leading the Falcon offense was Becky Notte. She finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs and one RBI. 

Claressa Mees earned her seventh win in the circle for the Falcons. She pitched all seven innings, allowing only one run on four hits and four strikeouts.

During the second game of the day, Messiah once again jumped out to an early lead. The Falcons scored one run in the first inning and then added another off a homerun in the second, taking a 2-0 lead. 

The Green and White cut the Falcon lead in half with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. Ruby rounded home plate after a Messiah fielding error off a Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) hit.

Messiah went up 4-1 in the fifth inning. A rip out to left center field allowed two Falcons to score. Ruby answered back for the Spartans in the bottom of the inning with a homerun. Unfortunately, the Spartans did not have enough momentum on offense and the Falcons would add one more run in the sixth inning to take control of the game.

Pacing the Green and White on offense in the nightcap was Ruby. She finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. 

Urkuski recorded the loss for the Spartans. Urkuski threw for 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. Thacker came in and finished out the remaining 5.1 innings. She allowed three runs on four hits, with eight walks and three strikeouts.

The Falcons offense was led by Brooke Pompeo, as she finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run and one RBI. 

Pitcher, Mallory Rutledge earned the win for Messiah. Rutledge pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Earning her first save of the season was Sarah Dietrich. She threw fro the final two innings and allowed zero hits, had two walks and three strikeouts.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday for a double header matchup at Franklin & Marshall. Game one is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
