YORK, Pa. – The York College softball squad dropped both games of a doubleheader to visiting Susquehanna University on a frigid Wednesday afternoon in York. The Spartans fell 2-1 in eight innings to the Crusaders during the first game before losing 13-6 in the second.
For the season, York now stands at 4-12 (0-0 in the CAC) while the Crusaders improve to 10-2 overall.
In the first contest of the afternoon, the Crusaders jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Susquehanna took advantage of an error from the Spartans to start the game. A single to right field scored their run.
The Spartans did not let the early deficit defeat them. They answered Susquehanna back with one run in the second inning to tie up the game. Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Caroll) had a shot out to center field that allowed Sarah Harris (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) to score.
The remainder of the game saw little offense. Both the Spartans and Crusaders did not earn another run in regulation. Heading into overtime, with a 1-1 tie, Susquehanna capitalized on having a runner start on second and they were able to get a run on the board. Unfortunately, the Spartans offense seemed to disappear after the second inning and they would not get any runs in the bottom of the eight.
Game number two played out much different. Both teams finally go their bats going. Susquehanna was strong offensively, scoring runs in all seven innings. The Crusaders once again got on the board in the first inning, with two runs. York recorded a run in the bottom of the first. Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) singled up the right side and Harris scored her second run of the day.
Heading into the third, the Crusaders pushed the lead to five, after a three run inning. The Spartans came back in the bottom of third and added another one run inning. Hill slammed the ball out to center field for a double that helped Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) cross home plate.
The Spartans cut Susquehanna's lead to three with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Harris had a bomb out to centerfield and Jessica Canami (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) along with Aryn Johnston (Bowie, Md./Bowie) recorded runs. Despite having more offensive production, the Spartans could not hold the Crusaders back.
Leading, 10-6 heading into the seventh, Susquehanna opened up with another three run inning. As in the first game, the Crusader were able to shutout the Spartans in their final at bat.
Pacing the Green and White on offense was Harris. Despite only going 2-for-7, she finished the day scoring three runs and adding two RBI's. Ruby went 3-for-6 from the plate and added one RBI. Canami scored one run and was 2-for-5.
Freshman pitcher Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) suffered both losses in the circle. In the first game, Levine pitched all eight innings, she allowed two runs on six hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. During game two, Levine pitched 3.1 innings, she gave up six runs on five hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. Senior Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) came in for 2.1 innings. Urkuski allowed five runs on nine hits. She recorded one walk and two strikeouts. Finishing the game out was freshman Terra Diehl (Hanover, Pa./Hanover). She tossed for 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday at Misericordia for a doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 pm.
