Spartans Fall in Home Opener Doubleheader
YORK, Pa. – The York College women's softball team suffered two losses in their home opener against Shenandoah University on Monday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. Shenandoah took a quick lead and held on to a 6-3 victory in the first game. The Spartans came back and fought hard in the second game, but fell 5-3 in eight innings.
The Spartans move to 4-10 overall, while the Hornets improve to 8-6.
In the first game of the day, the Spartans struggled offensively. The Green and White went three up, three down in the first five innings, not getting anyone on base. The Hornets capitalized early on a Spartan error and were able to score a run in the top of the second. Shenandoah continued to build their lead in the third inning with three more runs.
York finally got their bats going in the bottom of the sixth. The Spartans utilized a Hornet throwing error to get Vanessa Mendez (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) on base, their first base runner of the game. Thanks to another Hornet error the Green and White were able to record two runs. Hannah Hugel's (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) left field single helped Cara Rubinaccio (Boonton, N.J./Morris Knolls) cross the plate and earn the Spartans their third run of the inning. Unfortunately, the early lead was too much for the Spartans to overcome.
Mendez and Rubinaccio paced the way for a spotty Spartan offense. They both finished 1-for-2 with a run. Hugel was 1-for-3 and earned an RBI.
Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) recorded the loss in the circle. Levine pitched 2.2 innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits with one walk. Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) came in as a reliever and pitched 4.1 innings. She allowed two runs on five hits and tallied one strikeout.
The Hornets were led by Erica Kondzielawa as she went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Kimberly Brady was 1-for-2 and added one run along with two RBI's.
Stephanie Cameron earned the win for Shenandoah. She pitched a perfect game through the first five innings. Cameron pitched a total of six innings. She allowed three runs on three hits and recorded nine strikeouts. Brianne Morlock pitched the final inning for the Hornets. She was credited with the save and allowed only one hit.
The second game had a much different tone then the first. The Spartans were looking to redeem themselves. Both teams went scoreless in the first inning. Shenandoah was the first to get on the scoreboard again. The Hornets took advantage of an error by York and scored two runs in the top of the second.
The Spartans answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) slammed the ball out to right center field, which allowed Hugel and Aryn Johnston (Bowie, Md./Bowie) to score.
The Hornets took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. The Spartans were not ready to back down and continued to battle. With the game on the line, in the bottom of the seventh, Mendez hit a big single that allowed Sarah Harris (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) to score and tie up the game.
Shenandoah once again was able to capitalize on a Spartan error and some questionable calls to take a 5-3 lead that York would not be able to overcome.
Thacker paced the Spartans on offense in game two. She was 1-for-2 with two RBI's. Harris was 1-for-2 and added one run. Mendez also added an RBI.
Levine recorded another loss. She pitched all eight innings of the second game. Levine allowed five runs, two earned, on 11 hits and tallied two strikeouts.
Morgan Coble led the Hornets on offense in game two. She went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Denise Mitchell added two RBI's.
The Hornets used two pitchers to earn a tough victory. Megan Trip was awarded the win. She pitched five innings, allowing two runs on two hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Stephanie Cameron recorded the save in the circle. She pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit and three strikeouts.
York returns to action on March 21, 2013 for a home matchup against Susquehanna University. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
