Softball Concludes Spring Trip With Penn State Sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The York College softball team concluded their spring trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with a sweep of Penn St. Hazleton and Penn St. Harrisburg on a sunny but cool Thursday.

In game one, the Spartans downed Hazleton 9-1 in five innings and then York completed the sweep with a 4-0 shutout of Harrisburg in the nightcap.

Against Hazleton, the Lions took the early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first.

After a one-two-three bottom of the first, the Spartans got the offense going in the second. Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) started the rally with a double. She came around to score on a Lions error. Sophomore Vanessa Mendez (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) then gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish with an RBI single down the right field line.

York pushed the lead to 4-1 in the third as Thacker had an RBI double and came around to score on a Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Caroll) run scoring single.

The Spartans blew the game open in fourth as they exploded for five runs. Senior Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) had a two run single and then Ruby jacked a three-run homer to account for the five-run outburst.

Freshman Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) picked up the win in the circle as she allowed an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts in the win.

Jaqueline Furch suffered the loss as she allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings of work.

Thacker continued a torrid spring trip with three hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Two of her three hits were doubles, her sixth and seventh of the year. Ruby went 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBI while she also scored twice. Her home run was her first collegiate round tripper. Senior Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.

Sabrina Bubula and Carly Rossi each had singles to comprise the Lion offense.

In the nightcap, Levine was fantastic as the freshman twirled a two-hit shutout with a career-high nine strikeouts in seven innings. Levine, who did not walk a batter in the two games on Thursday, allowed just two singles in the win. She improves to 4-5 with her two wins for the day.

The Spartans got Levine all the runs she would need in the third inning. Hugel had a two-run single to right to open the scoring. The two other Spartan runs came on a passed ball and a Thacker ground out to short to provide for the 4-0 cushion.

York wouldn't be able to add to the lead but it didn't matter to the Spartan hurler as she retired the last 10 Lion hitters she faced in the game.

Hugel paced York as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Thacker was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Jessica Canami (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Aryn Johnson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) each had a hit and a run scored.

Rachel Fisher and Rieley Loch had the two singles for the Lions.

The Spartans end their eight game trip with a respectable mark of 4-4 as their overall record rises to 4-8.

The Spartans are slated to open their home campaign on Monday afternoon when they host Shenandoah in a non-conference twin bill in York. Game one is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
