SALISBURY, MD – The 17th ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls downed York College 5-1 in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference softball tournament on Thursday afternoon in Salisbury, MD. The loss ends the Spartans' stay in the tournament as they dropped a pair in the double elimination tournament.
The Sea Gulls improve to 33-5 overall as they advance to the weekend portion of the tournament 2-0. The Spartans fall to 11-21 overall.
The Gulls opened the scoring in the second courtesy of a Casey Zaino RBI double as the hosts took the early advantage.
York answered with a single run of their own in the top of the third as Hannah Hugel singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on an error by Salisbury.
The Gulls took the lead in the fourth as they put together four runs on four hits including a solo home run by Erika Brittingham to break the tie. Harley Hill added a two-run single in the inning.
Brittingham would also get the job done in the circle as she allowed just two hits. Brittingham retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced en route to earning her 18th win of the year. She struck out nine and walked just one in her complete game victory.
Senior Brittany Therres threw the ball well but suffered the loss as she allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits with a strikeout. She falls to 10-13 with the setback.
Hill led the Gulls with two hits and a pair of RBI while Brittingham and Zaino each added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Hugel and Brittany Schlorff had the Spartans' two hits while Hugel scored York's lone run.
The Spartans continue their regular season on Tuesday, April 24 as they host Franklin & Marshall College in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one first pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
