FREDERICK, MD - The York College softball squad notched their second Capital Athletic Conference sweep of the week as the Spartans took a pair of games from Hood College on Friday afternoon in Frederick, MD. The Spartans won game one 6-2 and completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
The Spartans improve to 7-11 overall and 4-2 in the CAC while the Blazers are now 5-16 overall and 0-6 in the league.
In the opener, the Spartans opened the scoring on a Rachel Klein RBI single in the second. York pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third courtesy of a Hood fielding error.
The Spartans got some insurance in the seventh with a three-run uprising. Hannah Hugel had an RBI double while Ruby had a two-run double in the frame.
The Blazers closed out the scoring with a run but Cory Urkuski got out of the frame and earned the save for York.
Therres earned the win as she tossed five innings, allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Urkuski tossed two innings, allowing a run on four hits with one walk.
Jennifer Rutherford took the loss as she allowed six runs, three earned, on 10 hits with one strikeout. She falls to 3-6 with the loss.
Ruby led the Spartans as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Hugel added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Sara Thacker added two hits and two runs scored for the Green and White.
Brianna Dyckman collected three of the Blazers' game-one hits as she went 3-for-3 with a run scored in the loss. Kelly Gafner was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
In game two, the Spartans got all the runs they needed in the third inning. Thacker started the frame with a triple to left. She came home on a Brittany Schlorff RBI single to right. Erin O'Leary singled to move Schlorff to second with one out. Ruby moved Schlorff and O'Leary into scoring position with a bunt and Therres made that strategy pay off with a big two-run double as York took the 3-0 lead.
The Blazers rallied for a two-run fifth but it could have been much bigger for the hosts. Hood left the bases loaded as Therres got a pop up to short to preserve the one-run Spartan advantage.
Neither team threatened the rest of the way as the Green and White earned their fourth conference win of the year.
Therres earned the win as she allowed two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Therres improves to 6-5 overall with the victory.
Alison Schuetz took the loss as she allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings of action. She walked two and struck out one as she falls to 0-2.
Therres was great at the dish for the Spartans as she went 3-for-3 with two RBI including her sixth double of the year. Schlorff went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while O'Leary was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Gafner led Hood with three hits and a run scored while Casey Dunn and Jackie Wenzel each had two knocks for the Blazers.
The Spartans return to action on Monday when they step out of conference to face Messiah College in Grantham, PA. Game one of the double header is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
