Spartans Split Pair with Crusaders on Thursday
SELINSGROVE, PA - The York College Spartan softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at Susquehanna University. The Spartans won game one 3-1 before the Crusaders cruised to an 11-3 five-inning win in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 3-9 overall while the Crusaders stand at 10-6 after the split.
In game one, the Spartans jumped on top in the top of the second. The rally started when junior Hannah Hugel drew a one-out walk. Junior Sarah Harris reached on an error before Carly Farr drilled an RBI single, scoring Hugel and moving Harris to third. Rachel Klein singled to score Harris while Farr moved to third as the Spartan lead grew to 2-0. The Spartans then squeezed home their third run as Jena Ruby plated Farr as the Green and White took control of game one early.
The Crusaders got one of those runs back in the third as Madison Clark had an RBI single with two outs in the frame. Spartan starter Brittany Therres minimized the damage as she got the third out of the inning, stranding two Susquehanna runners in the inning.
Therres got out of a few jams during the later innings of the game. The Crusaders left two runners stranded in the third and fourth innings and Therres got a huge double play in the sixth to hold the Crusaders at bay.
Therres picked up the game one win as she scattered nine hits in her seven innings of work. She allowed one run while she registered two strikeouts and she did not walk a batter during her outing. She improves to 3-4 with the win.
Morgan Lewis suffered the loss for the Crusaders as she allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in her seven innings of action. She struck out one and walked two as she falls to 3-2 with the setback.
Klein and Farr led the Spartan offense with two hits and an RBI each. Farr also scored for the Spartans as York snapped a five game losing skid.
Brianna Murphy and Kathryn Gilbert paced Susquehanna with two hits each. Clark had the Crusaders' lone RBI while Lauren Gilbert scored Susquehanna's only game-one run.
In game two, the Spartans got off to a good start with a run in the top of the first. After the Crusaders tallied a pair in the bottom of the second, the Spartans scored a pair of their own in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
That advantage would be short lived as the Crusaders scored three in the bottom of the third followed by a six-run explosion in the fourth to blow the game wide open.
Sarah Hoffman earned the win as she tossed five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with one strikeout. She improves to 5-3.
Freshman Sara Thacker suffered the loss for York as she allowed four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. She walked three and struck out two as she is still in search of her first collegiate win as she now stands at 0-4.

Stephanie Chlebove was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Gilbert was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Clark and Brittany Devlin each contributed two hits and two RBI for the 13-hit Crusader attack.
