Spartans Fall in Sunday Twinbill at EMU
HARRISONBURG, VA – The York College softball squad continued their weekend road trip to Virginia with a pair of losses at Eastern Mennonite University. The Spartans dropped game one 13-1 before falling in game two by a score of 5-2.
The Spartans, losers of five straight, fall to 2-8 overall while the Royals are now 14-2 after the sweep.
Game one quickly went from bad to worse for the Spartans. The Royals erupted for five first inning runs, putting the Spartans behind early. After York went in order in the second, Eastern Mennonite blew it wide open with eight runs on five hits as the lead grew to 13-0.
Lisa Lee earned the win in the circle for the Royals as she tossed five innings, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. She improves to 6-1 with the win.
Sara Thacker took the loss as she allowed eight runs on seven hits with four walks in her 1.2 innings of work. She falls to 0-3 with the loss. Rachel Martin relieved Thacker in the bottom of the second but allowed five runs on three hits with two walks. Cory Urkuski closed out the game with two shutout innings of work as she allowed one hit with two walks and a strikeout.
Sara Jenkins led the Royals as she was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Brooke Hensley was the other Royal with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Eastern Mennonite got hits from eight of their nine starters in the game.
York received singles from Molino, Mendez, Jena Ruby, and Urkuski in game one.
In the nightcap, York opened the scoring in the top of the first as Erin O'Leary drew a lead off walk. After a O'Leary was sacrificed to second, senior Brittany Therres doubled to center, pushing O'Leary to third. Senior Brittany Schlorff singled up the middle to score O'Leary with the game's opening run.
York maintained that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when the Royals struck for four runs on five hits.
The Spartans got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Hannah Hugel RBI single to left.
The Royals closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth on a Courtney Allman solo home run.
Molly Smith earned the win for the Royals as she threw four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk. She improves to 4-0. Jordan Aylor earned the save as she threw three scoreless innings as she scattered three hits with one strikeout. It was Aylor's first save of the year.
Therres went the distance as she suffered the loss. She allowed five runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She falls to 2-4 with the setback.
Lee led the Royals offense, as she was 3-for-4 with a run scored while three other Royals had two hits in the game. Rasheeda Crews had two hits and two RBI while Allman had two hits, an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Junior Sarah Harris led the Spartans with two hits while Schlorff and Hugel had the Spartan RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they travel to Susquehanna University to face the Crusaders in a non-conference double dip. Game one is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
