Spartans Split Friday Twinbill at Salisbury Tournament

SALISBURY, MD  - The York College softball squad split their two games during the opening day of the Salisbury University Invitational in Salisbury, MD. The Spartans opened the day with a 4-3 win over Baruch College followed by a 7-2 loss to Virginia Wesleyan in the nightcap. The Spartans are now 8-2 overall.

In the opener, Baruch jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Spartans used a two-spot in the bottom of the third to take the 2-1 advantage. Senior Desiree Halaka had an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game before Erin O'Leary had a two-out RBI single for the Green and White.

The Spartans extended the lead to three in the fourth with two more runs courtesy of a Karen Carr RBI double and a Hannah Hugel RBI single to score Carr as the Spartan lead grew to 4-1.

Baruch picked up single runs in the fifth and in the sixth to draw to within one. Junior starter Brittany Therres allowed a base runner on an error in the seventh but escaped from damage as she picked up her fifth win of the year.

Therres allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk in her seven innings of work. Andrea Tepfer suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout for the Bearcats. She tossed six innings as she falls to 0-1 for the campaign.

Offensively, Hugel had two hits a run scored and an RBI while Carr had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. O'Leary also had two hits and an RBI.

Carmen Pagan-Colon led the Bearcats with three hits, two RBI and a run scored. Melanie Pellegrino added a hit and an RBI for Baruch.

In the nightcap, the Spartans jumped on the Marlins for a pair of runs in the top of the first, reaching starter Christina Crawford early. The Spartans got both of their runs in the game on a pair of RBI walks. That would lead to a short outing for Crawford as she was lifted after the first inning.

The Marlins got one run back into the bottom of the first on a solo home run from Jaclyn Quinn.

Virginia Wesleyan lifted Crawford and MacKenzie Creech replaced her and shut down the Spartan offense. Creech allowed just four hits with ten strikeouts and no walks in her six innings of brilliant relief.

The Marlins took the lead in the fifth as they got to Spartan starter Chelsea Bock for a pair of runs, taking a 3-2 lead. Virginia Wesleyan blew it open with a four run sixth as all four tallies came on a grand slam from Season Dailey.

Creech improves to 4-1 win the win while Bock suffered her first collegiate loss. Bock allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and three strikeouts in her 5.1 innings of work. She falls to 3-1 with the setback.

Dailey was 1-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored while Tori Higginbotham was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Brenae Pettit chipped in a pair of RBI for the Marlins.

Carr had two of the Spartans' six hits while she had one of York's RBI. Rachel Klein added a hit and a run scored for YCP.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday at 12:00 pm when they face Lynchburg. York then closes out it's stay at Salisbury when the Spartans face Christopher Newport at 4:00 pm.
