Spartans Win Frostburg State University Invitational
FROSTBURG, Md. – The York College men's cross country team put together an impressive effort to win the Frostburg State University Invitational Saturday morning.
The Spartans finished with 44 total points for first. Coming in second place was Salisbury with 48 points and third was Mary Washington with 51 points. Other schools that competed included Gettysburg, St. Mary's, Frostburg State and Marymount.
Head Coach Erick Camodeca had the men do a workout prior to the race so that they would have to push themselves through fatigue, settle into the race and be able to pick up the pace in the last mile and catch as many runners as possible.
The strategy worked out very well for the Spartans. Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was impressive and won the race with a time of 27:49.70. The second finisher for the Green and White was Aaron Robertson (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) in fifth place at 28:46.00 and following right behind him with the race of the day was freshman Carus Cookman (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) with a time of 28:46.30.
Next to cross the finish line for York was Matt Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) at 29:30.50. Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans was Steven Childres (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) in 17th finishing at 29:32.60, Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa./Northampton) with a time of 29:45.60 and Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) at 29:46.60. Andrew Ward (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) also ran a strong race with a time of 30:48.80 and Camodeca feels he is beginning to get his legs under him.
"I was surprised with the end result for the men because of the pre-race workout, " said Camodeca. "Placing first is great, we finished with a quality effort."
The Spartans return to action Saturday at 11:00 am for the Dickinson College Long/Short Invitational.
