Hartung Caps Campaign with Outstanding National Championship Meet
WINNECONE, Wis. – York College sophomore Tim Hartung capped off his tremendous 2011 campaign with an outstanding showing at the 2011 NCAA Men's Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, November 19, in Winnecone, Wis.
In only his first national championship meet, Hartung traversed the 8,000-meter course in an excellent 24:57.20, an average of 5:02 per mile, to place 50th overall out of the 279 competitors.
"Tim ran exceptionally well today," Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca said. "We couldn't be happier or any more proud of him. "Our goal was the top-100 and our lofty goal was the top-50. It is an amazing thing for him being so young and for his first time out."
Hartung's fantastic effort, a time which marks a personal-best for the sophomore by nearly a minute, caps off what was a truly excellent campaign for both him and the York squad. Hartung captured the individual title at the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Championships, a first for the York program, while leading the Green and White to the men's team victory, yet another Spartan first. At the NCAA Mideast Regionals, Hartung snagged an outstanding ninth-place as he proved the first York cross country runner to ever qualify for nationals.
