Spartans Place Third at CAC Championships
FREDERICK, MD – The York College men’s cross country
squad nabbed a third-place team finish at the 2009 Capital Athletic
Conference Championships on Saturday at Heritage Farm Park in
Frederick, Md. The Green and White had a pair of runners collect
all-league honors while six Spartans landed in the top-25 of the
79-participant race.
Ryan Janes (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and
Jason Hinkle (York, Pa./Eastern York) each put in
All-CAC performances as both finished in the top-ten. Janes landed
on the all-conference first-team after registering a 27:31.34. The
CAC allots the championship race’s first seven positions
collect first-team honors as Janes just edged out Mary
Washington’s Matt Cash by a mere 33 hundredths of a second to
secure the accolade.
Hinkle notched a tenth-place finish as he completed the course in
a strong 27:43.26. The senior’s time provided for a
second-team All-CAC berth, an accolade he also garnered at last
season’s championships.
Matt Provonche (Churchville, Md./C. Milton
Wright), a 2008 All-CAC runner, finished in 18th on this
day crossing the line at 28:00.38. Andrew Friesema
(Adamstown, Pa./Cocalico) followed just behind Provonche
as he took 19th on the day traversing the course in 28:01.47.
The Spartans also took the 24th, 25th, and 26th spots. In just his
first CAC Championship, freshman standout Steven Childres
(Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) garnered 24th with a
time of 28:31.00 Bret Kilefner (Stevens,
Pa./Cocalico), another all-league performer last season,
finished the race in a 28:34.56 time to take 25th while
Patrick Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills
Regional) recorded a 28:36.91.
First place in the meet went to Mary Washington's Frank DeVar who recorded a stellar 25:23.66 as the CAC Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Year outpaced the rest of the field by over a minute and a half. His coach, Stan Soper, was named the league's Coach-of-the-Year, while Salisbury's Stephen Berstler was named teh CAC Rookie-of-the-Year after taking third in the race.
Overall, the Spartans finish behind CAC cross-country powers
Mary Washington and Salisbury. York finished the race in a total
time of 2:19:47.45 while averaging 27:57.49 as a squad.
The Green and White continue their training regimen in preparation
for next Saturday’s NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. The
race in Bethelem, Pa. is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
