DMR Finishes First as Spartans Sit Fourth After Day One at CAC Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College men's indoor track & field squad sits fourth of eight teams after day one of the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field championships on Friday afternoon in Newport News, Virginia.

The Spartans have totaled 21 points through four events. Host Christopher Newport leads the championships with 32 points while Mary Washington is second with 29 points. Salisbury is a mere one point in front of the Spartans with 22 points.

The Spartan distance relay team of Andrew Erickson, Ethan Budsock, Daniel Caldwell, and Grant Dell earned the win in the event as they crossed the time of 10:37.55, edging the foursome from Salisbury for the title. Senior Alex Smith earned a runner-up finish in the 5,000 meter run to earn the second-team All-CAC honor.

1. Distance Medley Relay – Andrew Erickson, Ethan Budsock, Daniel Caldwell, Grant Dell (10:37.55)

2. Alex Smith – 5,000 Meter run (15:12.80)

7. Ben Linne – 5,000 Meter run (15:32.50)

8. Jake O'Neill – 5,000 Meter run (15:33.20)

12. Matthew Zubrzycki – 5,000 Meter run (16:07.00)


Friday Notes:

The win for the distance medley relay team is the first since 2014 and comes one year after they finished second at last year's championships … the second-team All-CAC finish for Alex Smith is his first indoor All-CAC award … Smith led four top 12 finishers in the 5K as Ben Linne finished seventh, Jake O'Neill was eighth and Matthew Zubrzycki was 12th.
