Hartung Earns 6th All-American Award with 8th Place Finish
DELAWARE, OHIO – York College senior Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) earned his sixth NCAA All-American honors as he finished eighth in the 10,000 meter race at the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championship in Delaware, Ohio.
Hartung finished the race with a time of 31:29.48 as he was just over two seconds out of seventh and a comfortable ten seconds in front of the ninth place finisher. John Crain won the race with a time of 31:11.83 while Haverford's Chris Stadler placed second with a time of 31:17.50. Hartung finished 7th at last year's national championship meet in Wisconsin. He is now a two-time outdoor track and field All-American.
Hartung started off the race slowly as he entered the race as the 11th seed in the 20 runner field. He ran the first half of the race in a time of 16:34.
Around the fourth mile of the race, the pace picked up and Hartung was able to answer the challenge as he kept up with the lead pack.
Hartung really ran well in the second half of the race as he clipped off a second 5K time of 14:55, an improvement of a minute and 21 seconds.
Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco was happy with the performance of his senior standout.
"Tim ran a smart race and did what he needed to do to pick up his sixth All-American honor, " said LoBianco. "The race started out slow but Tim was ready to go when the lead pack started to pull away. He will use tomorrow to recover and get ready for Saturday."
Hartung will conclude his incredible Spartan career on Saturday when he participates in the 5K race. He is scheduled to start at 5:05 on Saturday afternoon. Fellow Spartan Robert Doster (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) will compete in the javelin throw on Saturday starting at 3:00 pm.
