Spartan Men Open Spring Season With a First Place Finish

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College men's track and field squad opened their spring season in stellar fashion with a first place finish at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Invitational hosted by Elizabethtown College on Saturday.

The Spartans and Elizabethtown tied for the top spot with 182 points to easily outdistance Dickinson as the Red Devils finished with 132 points.

The Spartans were strong in both the sprint and field events during the season opening meet.

In the sprints, York picked up two wins from Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) and another win from Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge). Tillman won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.37. Banta finished second in the race as he was .07 second back of his Spartan teammate. Tillman also won the 400 as he clocked in with a time of 51.22, which established a new personal best.

Banta was victorious in the 100, crossing the line in a time of 11.22. Sebastian Hall (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) finished third in the race with a time of 11.67 while Tim Pechart (Hanover, Pa./South Western) placed fourth with a time of 11.70.

Freshman Dylan Hartlaub (Manchester, Pa./York County School of Technology) notched a time of 2:02.53 in the 800 meter race while teammate Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) placed sixth with a time of 2:05.41.

Freshman Matt Hayes (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) picked up a fourth place finish in the 1500 with a time of 4:14.10 while he placed sixth in the 5K with a time of 16:42.25. Colin Fleming (Owings, Md./Northern) registered a fifth place finish in the 5K with a time of 16:37.06, the best time of his young career.

The Spartan had a pair of 4x100 relay teams finish first and second to notch big points for the Green and White. The foursome of Banta, Pechart, Hall, and Tillman won the race with a time of 43.26. The team of Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga), Ricky Jones (Tamaqua, Pa./Blue Mountain), John Follety (New Milford, N.J./New Milford), and Andrew Sarver (Olney, Md./Sherwood) combined to post a time of 43.76 to finish second to their teammates.

Sarver was York's highest finisher in the long jump as he covered a distance of 20'1" to place fourth in the event.

York received a pair of strong performances in the shot put as Eddie Kraft (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Alex Palescandolo (Derwood, Md./Magruder) placed second and fourth in the event. Kraft posted a best distance of 44'5.25" while Palescandolo registered a heave of 42'3.25".

Sophomore Robert Doster (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) won the javelin toss as he notched a winning throw of 173'11".

The threesome of Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven), Palescandolo, and Alonzo Abraham (Severn, Md./Meade) went two,three, four in the discus toss. Beauford placed second with a toss of 128'5" while Palescandolo was third with a toss of 126'4". Abraham was fourth with a best heave of 123'9".

Beauford notched another second place finish, this one in the hammer as he registered a best throw of 144'1". Ian O'Brien (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) placed third in the event with a toss of 134'4".

The Spartans return to action on April 5 when they travel to the Millersville Metric Open in Millersville, PA.
