YORK, PA – York College senior standout Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) has been invited to participate in the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska this coming weekend.
Hartung becomes the first Spartan runner to earn a bid to the national championship indoor meet.
Hartung will compete in the 5,000 meter race and the 3,000 meter race at the championship which will be held on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15.
Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco feels Hartung is primed for a big weekend in Nebraska.
"Tim has been working very hard since the end of cross country towards a goal of getting to indoor nationals for the first time," said LoBianoc. "We focused on the 5k for most of indoor, with the lingering thought of qualifying for the newly added 3k. After an early attempt at the 5k, he decided to race it again and set a new PR. Four days later, we traveled to Boston to give him a shot at the 3k, which he set a new PR in as well. He is currently ranked first in the 5k and third in the 3k. He is setting himself up perfectly to achieve All-American status in both events."
Hartung's top qualifying time in the 5k came at the George Mason Last Chance meet last Sunday as he recorded a time of 14:22.15 to win the event. He followed that with time of 8:17.55 in the 3k at Tufts University on Thursday in their last chance meet.
