Four Records Fall For Men at CAC Championships
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College men's track and field squad ended their indoor season at the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. The Spartans finished fourth of six teams at the championships with 77 points.
Salisbury won the team title with 160 points as they captured their third straight indoor CAC Championship.
Sophomore Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) blasted his own school record in the weight throw to start off the day. Beauford reset his week old record by five inches with a toss of 49-5.5 as he placed third in the event.
In the 800 meters, freshman James Gonzales (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) set the school record with a time of 1:58.38. The time was good enough for a fourth place finish as he broke his own school record by over a second.
Senior Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) had another record setting day. In the 3,000 meters, Hartung set the CAC record with a time of 8:50.24 to take first.
The distance medley relay team of Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), Okera Beidleman (Germantown, Md./Northwest), Gonzales, and Hartung set the new CAC record. The team raced out and won the event by 10 seconds for a school-record time of 10:34.69.
Senior Eddie Kraft (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) led the Spartans in the shot put with a toss of 45-4.25 for a third place finish.
In the distance events, Hartung led the way for a strong York contingent in the 5,000 meter run. Hartung took the crown with a time of 15:41.90, followed by Matt Hayes (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) who finished second (15:42.16), Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa./Northampton) who finished fourth (15:58.85), and Patrick Morrison (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) (16:09.16) who placed sixth.
In the one mile run, Stetson grabbed a third place finish with a time of 4:27.02.
In the 3,000 meter race, Wil Murray (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) completed the race in under the nine minute mark with a time of 8:59.05 for a third place finish.
In the 60 meter hurdles, standout freshman Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga) was able to grab a fourth place finish with a time of 8.63. Sophomore Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) placed sixth in the 200, with a time of 22.97. The 4x400 team placed sixth with a time of 3:32.25.
Selected members of the Spartan squad will participate in the George Mason Last Chance Invitational on Sunday, March 2. The remainder of the team will prep for the Outdoor opener on March 15 at the Green and White Opener in York.
