Hartung Earns Second All-American Honors, Cavaluchi Finishes Career With Strong Showing
LA CROSSE, Wis. – For the Spartans, day one of the 2013 NCAA DIII National Championships was extremely successful. Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) earned his second All-American honors this year with a seventh place finish in the 10K and Phil Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) qualified for the long jump finals and finished ninth overall.
Cavaluchi started out the day with his best jump. His first attempt of 7.21 meters helped to land him into a spot for the finals. Unfortunately, he could not record a further distance during last few jumps. Cavaluchi fell just .01 meters short of eighth place and earning All-American status.
Head Coach Erick Camodeca said that he was so proud of Phil and that he felt today was an amazing way for him to finish out his career
Hartung put together a strong, smart race to help him earn his first outdoor track & field All-American status. He started out in the middle of the pack and raced comfortably through the majority of the race, keeping in the top ten. During the final few laps, Hartung kicked into the next gear and finished with a final push to record a time of 30:09.20.
Hartung was really happy with his performance and is confident he will be able to earn himself another All-American title on Saturday in the 5,000-meter run.
Hartung gets the day off tomorrow and will return to the track on Saturday at 5:55 pm for the 5K.
