WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The York College men's track and field team opened up its 2013 outdoor season at West Chester University on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
The Spartan distance runners started out very strong in head coach Erick Camodeca's eyes, but he felt the other events struggled throughout the day.
"The weather was almost perfect for the distance kids," said Camodeca. "On the other hand, the weather was not ideal for all the other events and the cold wind gave us less than solid performances."
Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) continued the outdoor season right where he left off in indoor. Hartung cruised to a first place victory in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:05.90. Coming in a few spots behind Hartung was Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) with a strong time of 15:51.57. Aaron Robertson (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) finished in fifth crossing the line at 16:00.08. Finishing 12,13,14 were Spartans Joey Orlando (Minotola, N.J./Buena Regional), Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa./Northampton) and Matt Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright). The three finished with times of 16:36.47, 16:38.33 and 16:42.42, respectively.
In the 10,000-meter run, Paul Glassmoyer (York, Pa./West York) led the Spartans with a third place finish in 35:25.64.
Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) came close to breaking 52 in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.20 and a 15th place finish. Coach Camodeca felt good about his performance.
In the 4x100 the Spartans earned third place. The relay team made up of Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), Sean Welsh (Baltimore, Md./Parkville), Sebastian Hall (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) and Phillip Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) finished in 43.82.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday at the Elizabethtown Capital Area Classic. The meet is set to start at 2:00 pm.
