Hartung and Welsh Break Records at Bucknell; Spartans Also Compete at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The majority of the York College men's track and field team competed at the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday afternoon. A few student-athletes also traveled to compete at a competitive Bucknell Invitational.

The top thrower of the day for the Spartans was Eddie Kraft (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial). Kraft came in 13th in the shot put with a heave of 12.12 meters and 15th in the weight throw with a distance of 11.52 meters.

Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) also threw strong, beating his throw from last weekends meet in the weight throw. Beauford recorded a distance of 10.82 meters.

Otis Ray (Elkton, Md./Elkton Christian) earned top-ten finishes in both the long jump and high jump. Otis earned ninth place after a leap of 5.74 meters .He also came in 10th place in the high jump after recording a height of 1.67 meters.

In the mile run, Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) had a stellar race and finished in seventh place with a time of 4:32.49. Also running well in the distance races were Steven Childres (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) and Connor Simpson (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent). Childres and Simpson finished the 5K in sixth and 11th place with times of 16:11.08 and 16:40.52, respectively. In the 3,000-meter run Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa./Northampton) raced to a seventh place finish in 9:20.77. Finishing a few spots behind, in 11th place was Matt Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) with a time of 9:26.10.

The Green and White had a strong showing in the sprints. Demetrice Cox (York, Pa./Dallastown) looked strong with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash in 23.46. Andrew Langston (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) earned fourth place with a time of 23.53 and Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) clocked a 23.67 for ninth place.

Three Spartans also traveled to Bucknell on Saturday. Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Phillip Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) and Sean Welsh (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) all put in strong performances.

Hartung shattered the school and Capital Athletic Conference record in the 5K with a time of 14:58.01. He held the previous record of 15:19.27, which he set last weekend at Susquehanna.

Cavaluchi just missed the school record in the long jump. He came in third place with a distance of 6.79 meters, only .03 meters off the record.

Welsh continues to improve his speed in the 200-meter dash. He broke the school record and finished in tenth place over a highly competitive field with a time of 23.01.

The Spartans will now gear up for the CAC Indoor Championships on Sunday, February 17 at 11:00 am.
