3K Record Falls in York's Pre-CAC Championships Tune-Up
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The York College men's track & field squad competed at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University on Saturday, the final Spartan tune-up meet prior to next week's Capital Athletic Conference Championships.
Sophomore standout Tim Hartung broke yet another program record as he adds to his tremendous list of accomplishments this academic year. Hartung, who also owns the school record in the 5k and 10k, broken in 2012 and 2011, respectively, blistered the field in the 3,000-meter event. The sophomore ran to a Spartan-record 8:38.23 as he won the event by a full ten seconds. Hartung scorches his own previous school record of 8:54.42 set last April also at the Kaiser Classic.
Rookie Wil Murray collected his first collegiate victory on Saturday as he bested the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Murray posted a 10:09.64 to register the triumph.
In the 5,000 meters, junior Steven Childres ran his way to a fourth-place time at the Kaiser Classic. Childres notched a 15:48.17 in the distance event.
Fellow junior Phillip Cavaluchi put together a solid effort in the long jump with a leap of 6.88 meters. His signature event saw Cavaluchi nab fifth.
Marcus Bailey captured a top-ten finish out of over 40 competitors in the discus. Bailey, who is having a strong year in this event, launched the discus 41.15 meters to collect ninth overall.
Aaron Robertson ran to a 4:06.00 time in the 1500 meters.
The Spartans now turn their focus to the 2012 CAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 5-6 in Frostburg, Md. York will look to defend the conference title from last season in the CAC's first two-day track & field championships. Action is slated for a 3:00 pm start on the 5th and 12:00 pm on the 6th.
