YORK, PA – The York College men's tennis team opened the fall portion of their 2013-14 season with a solid 6-3 win over Messiah College on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in York.
The Spartans are now 1-0 while the Falcons fall to 0-1.
The Green and White opened the match by winning two of the three doubles points. The Falcons captured the number one doubles match 8-3 but York bounced back to win the other two. The tandem of Nathaniel Hoskins (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) notched an 8-6 second doubles win for the Spartans. Freshman Kaltrin Bullaj (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) and sophomore Zach Hanson (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) combined to earn a 9-7 third doubles win.
The Falcons won the first two singles flights in three sets but the Spartans bounced back to earn wins in the final four singles matches.
Hoskins was a double winner on the day as he defeated Joel Eisenhower 6-4, 7-5 in the third singles match. His doubles teammate Erk, won the fourth singles match when Zachary Brunner retired.
Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) earned a fifth singles win over Dan Rusling while Bullaj won his second match of the day as he picked up a three set victory in the sixth singles match.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Goucher College in a non-conference contest. The match in York is set for a 3:00 pm start.
