Green and White Record Two Wins to Open Spring Campaign
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The York College men's tennis team put together a fine start to the 2011 season as they picked up a pair of victories Wednesday during their opening day of competition on their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. The Spartans snagged two 8-1 triumphs on the day, besting Marywood in the morning before defeating St. John Fisher in the afternoon.
Against Marywood, York's official start to the season, the Green and White secured a decisive 8-1 result. York took two of the three doubles slots as Philip Myers and James Villari combined for an 8-4 win at second doubles while Ryan Harvey and Justin Hostetter posted an 8-1 triumph.
The Spartans would sweep the singles matches yet Marywood stretched York to three sets in two of those tilts.
In the second slot, Harvey, a returning All-Capital Athletic Conference performer, needed three sets to pick up his first victory of the spring campaign. Harvey bested Todd Doran 5-7, 6-3, 10-4.
Doubles partner Hostetter also needed a trio of sets to get by Ryan Mulqueen. Just as Harvey did however, Hostetter proved victorious as he finished the fifth singles match 6-1, 2-6, 10-4.
Myers won his fourth singles match 6-0, 6-1 while freshman Nathaniel Hoskins picked up the triumph with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 result.
York's second team win of the day came against St. John Fisher, which the Green and White also topped 8-1. This match proved a similar story as the Spartans took the second and third doubles slots and swept the singles play.
Myers and Villari snagged a 9-7 triumph while Harvey and Hostetter secured an 8-1 win.
In singles player, York needed only two sets in each match to record the sweep. Klein picked up the top spot victory with a 6-3, 6-4 result while Harvey took second with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
Jones' 6-3, 7-5 score gave him the result at number three and Myers scored a point for the Green and White with a 6-1, 6-0 fourth singles win.
Hostetter brought in a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at fifth singles while Hoskins won 7-6 (5-0), 6-3 in the sixth slot.
With two wins already under their belt to begin the spring, the Spartans will look for win number three when they return to action on Thursday, March 3. York will once again play a pair of matches as they take on Mercyhurst at 11:30 am followed by Cabrini at 3:30 pm in their final match of their trip to Hilton Head.
