YORK, PA – The York College men's swim team conclude their 2013-14 home campaign with a pair of non-conference wins on Friday night in York. The Spartans bested Gallaudet 169-34 and Penn State Altoona 118-86. Altoona registered a 145-51 win over Gallaudet in the tri-match's other result.
York improves to 8-3-1 overall while Gallaudet falls to 2-9 while Altoona now stands at 5-2-1.
The Spartans registered five first place finishes in the meet and 10 runner-up finishes.
The Spartans' four individual first place finishers were Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and Wynne Kirchner (Elkridge, Md./Howard).
Stoll picked up his victory in the 200 free, notching a time of 1:51.70 as he edged teammate Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa) who touched the wall in a time of 1:52.15.
Lucash won the 50 free as he led a one-two-three Spartan sweep of the event. Lucash finished with a time of 22.84 followed by junior Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del./William Penn) who finished with a time of 23.31. Freshman Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) placed third with a time of 23.36.
Terrell posted a victory in the 100 free, edging teammate David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) for the win. Terrell finished with a time of 50.01 while Altobelli completed the race in a time of 51.38.
Kirchner picked up York's final individual win as he cruised to a victory in the 500 free, touching the wall in a time of 5:17.39. Teammate Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished second, just under seven seconds back of Timmerman while Lucash finished third with a time of 5:29.92.
The Spartans' 200 freestyle relay squad of Terrell, Lucash, Altobelli and junior Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) combined to win the event with a time of 1:31.55.
Other runner up finishes for the Spartans included the 200 medley relay team of Matthew Corkwell (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), Stoll, Martin Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown), and Bonner as they notched a time of 1:48.17. Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven) recorded a pair of second place finishes for York. He was the runner-up in the 1000 free with a time of 11:04.74 and also in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:03.85.
Latchford added a second runner-up finish in the 200 IM as he recorded time of 2:12.72. Bonner posted a second place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 56.49. Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) notched a second place finish in the 100 back, completing the race in a time of 1:00.81.
The Spartans close out their regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Ursinus to face the Bears in a non-conference contest. The meet is set for a 1:00 pm start.
