Spartans Dominate En Route to Victory

YORK, Pa. – the York College men's swim team rebounded from last week's tie by taking down conference rival Salisbury 157-105 Saturday afternoon. Freshman Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes) showed why the CAC should be on watch.

Not only did Stoll help win the 200 yard medley relay, but he two first place finishes as well as a second in the individual events. In the relay, he teamed with sophomore Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa) and juniors Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) and Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Caravel Academy) to post a time of 1:39.09. He would turn around in the next event, and win the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:33.40, 13 seconds faster than Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) who finished in second at 10:46.28. His other top finish came in the 500 yard freestyle where he set the pace at 5:04.44. He would go on to finish second in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.24.

Aside from Stoll, the entire freshmen class showed their potential at the college ranks. Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./ / Randolph), Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa. / Strath Haven), and Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) would combine to complete the trifecta in the 100 yard breaststroke. Timmerman's 1:03.74 was good for first, while McCullough posted a second place 1:04.93 and Byrne rounded it out with a 1:06.54. Timmerman and McCullough would team up for another 1-2 finish in the 200 yard breaststroke. Timmerman again topped the field, posting a time of 2:23.49. McCullough finished right on his heels at 2:23.71.Terrell would earn another second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle by posting a time of 50.34. Wynne Kirchner (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) made his contribution by finishing first in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.42. Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) got on the score sheet with his third place, 2:14.70 finish in the 200 yard backstroke.

Sophomore David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) led the sophomore class by earning a second and two third place finishes. He kicked off his afternoon in the 100 yard backstroke, earning one of his third place finishes at 58.67. His second place finish came in the 200 yard backstroke when he touched the wall in 2:09.76. His final third place finish came in the 200 yard individual medley when he touched the wall in 2:12.38. Walthall contributed a third place, 5:12.16 finish in the 500 yard freestyle to the Spartan effort.

Juniors Bonner, Hughes, and Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn) gave performances in which Spartan fans have come accustom to seeing. Before the trio, along with freshman Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville), would take first in the 200 yard freestyle relay, they would chalk up points in the individual events. Bonner rounded out the top three in the 100 yard freestyle with a tie of 51.18; Latchford would nab the top spot in the event at 50.00. Latchford would also take first place points in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:49.77, an event in which Hughes would provide a supporting third place finish at 1:51.61. Hughes would add a second place 22.36 finish in the 50 yard freestyle to his day.
