Spartans Swim to Tie With Washington & Jefferson
YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swim team battled to a 131-131 tie Saturday afternoon when they took on non-conference Washington & Jefferson in the York College Natatorium. Before the meet kicked off the Spartans recognized their lone men's senior, Matthew Corkwell (Piscataway, N.J. / Piscataway) for his contributions over the last four seasons.
The afternoon began with the 200 yard medley relay. The Spartan quartet of Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa), Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn), and Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) nabbed first placed by combining for a 1:39.27 finish.
The junior class continued their strong season with big performances for the Green and White. Bonner helped match the 200 yard medley relay performance by contributing to the 200 yard freestyle relay with fellow junior Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Caravel Academy) in posting a first place time of 1:30.46. Bonner would go on to post a pair of top finishes by completing the 50 yard freestyle in 22.38 and the 50 yard butterfly in 24.74. Hughes contributed a pair of runner-up finishes by finishing the 200 yard freestyle in 1:50.92 and the 100 yard freestyle in 49.71. Latchford's day consisted of a pair of third place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly. He posted a 1:52.30 in the freestyle contest and a 59.58 in the butterfly event. Adam Schin (Lewisberry, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) added a second place, 25.94 finish in the 50 yard butterfly.
The sophomore class, led by Walthall, provided valuable support for the Green and White effort. Aside from his relay contribution, Walthall raced to a pair of top finishes in the breaststroke events. In the 50 yard breaststroke, he set the pace at 28.11. In the 100 yard variety, his pace was 1:00.66. David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) got in on the action by placing second in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 18:27.13.
The freshmen class showed their potential as they gain valuable experience in the college ranks. Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph) and Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa. / Strath Haven) finished the trifecta in both the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke events. Timmerman took second in each with times of 29.11 and 1:03.48, respectively. McCullough's 29.55 and 1:04.32, respectively, was good for third place in each event. Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) supported Altobelli in the 1650 yard freestyle by placing third with a time of 18:37.66, before taking third in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.31. Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) took second place in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:10.98 after a third place, 23.16 finish in the 50 yard freestyle. Stoll added a pair of second place individual finishes to the day. The backstroker finished the 50 yard event in 25.49 before finishing the 100 yard variety in 55.55. Terrell would also team with Hughes, Bonner, and fellow freshman Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville) for the 200 yard freestyle.
The tie brings the Green and White to 5-2-1 on the season. The Spartans are back in action next Saturday, November 23 when they take on Salisbury in CAC action.
