Walthall’s Record Performance Not Enough as Spartans Fall to Mary Washington
YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swim team fell to the University of Mary Washington Friday night by a score of 186-76. Sophomore Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa) continued his impressive season by breaking the pool record in the 100 yard backstroke, a record he set just last week. Walthall's first place performance set the new record at 58.33.
Prior to his record setting performance, Walthall teamed with Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes), Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn), and Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) for the 400 yard medley relay. The quartet would post a 3:40.64, garnering second place.
Stoll would put forth an impressive meet in the individual events. His 56.55 in the 100 yard backstroke would chalk third place points on the Spartan side of the scoreboard. In the 200 yard backstroke, his 2:01.32 was good enough for a second place finish. Stoll rounded out the night by putting all the four strokes together in the 400 yard IM. Stoll edged the field with an impressive first place finish of 4:28.58.
Walthall would continue his success in the breaststroke in the 200 yard event. His time of 2:09.42 placed him second.
Junior Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Caravel Academy) put together a solid meet to help the Spartans. He placed third in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.75. He complimented that performance by sprinting to a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle in 22.35.
The Green and White also saw strong performances in the 1000 yard freestyle and 200 yard butterfly. David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) finished third in the 1000 with a 10:59.96. Adam Schin (Lewisberry, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) swam to a third place finish in the 200 yard butterfly, touching the wall in 2:15.82.
The defeat drops the Spartans to 2-1 on the season. They will look to rebound tomorrow when they travel to Marymount for a 2:00 pm tilt. The Green and White return home on November 9 when they host St. Mary's, Dickinson, and St. Vincent in a tri-meet.
