Walthall Named Rookie of the Year As Day Three of CAC Championship Concludes Season
ST.MARY'S CITY, Md. – The York College men's swim team dove into the water for the last time in the 2012-2013 season at the Capital Athletic Championships placed third, with 274 points. The day would see another record fall to the freshman star Kyle Walthall (Port Huereme, Ca./Rio Mesa), who would go on to earn Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors, the first Spartan to win the award since the 2004-2005 campaign.
The preliminary session was kicked off with the 200 yard backstroke; an event that sent two Spartans to the finals. Sophomore Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del./ William Penn) finished fifth with a time of 1:59.98. Senior Andy Woods (Dover, Pa./Dover Area) finished in 2:02.95, garnering an eighth place finish. Martin Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J/Woodstown) earned a consolation birth with his 2:15.03 finish.
Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) qualified for the 100 yard freestyle finals with an eighth place, 48.69 finish. Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa/Ridley) put forth a consolation effort by completing the race in 48.92.
Tyler Ziegler (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area Senior) earned a spot in the finals of the 200 yard breaststroke event with a third place finishing time of 2:14.75. Saturday's star, Walthall continued his success as he finished fourth in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.38.
The men finished off the preliminaries with two consolation efforts in the 200 yard butterfly contest. Adam Schin earned a consolation bid with a time of 2:05.69, as Matthew Corkwell (Piscataway, N.J/Piscataway) earned his berth with a 2:21.52 finish.
The Green and White began the night session by send two swimmers into the water for the 1650 yard freestyle event. Andrew Ward completed the 66 lap race in 18:24.37, while teammate Jared McKenzie (Spring Grove, Pa./Southridge) finished in 18:35.38.
The 200 yard backstroke had a pair of Spartan participants. Latchford finished in sixth with a time of 2:00.68, while Woods finished eighth with a 2:04.50. In the consolation heat of the event, Schmidt finished second (10th overall) with a 2:12.98.
The 100 yard freestyle saw Hughes take eighth place by finishing with a time of 49.96. Bonner, however, topped the consolation heat with a 47.98, earning him a ninth overall finish.
Walthall continued his rookie success as he broke another record, this time the 200 yard breaststroke. By dropping just over eight seconds off his preliminary time, Walthall finished second while breaking Steven Yeager's 2010 record of 2:14.48. Walthall's new record stands at 2:07.24. In the same event, Ziegler finished fifth with a time of 2:15.34.
The two Spartan representatives in the 200 yard butterfly competed in the consolation heat. Schin finished the heat in fourth (12th overall) with a time of 2:07.23. Corkwell finished his last individual race of the year in 2:17.35.
The men finished the year strong as the team of Hughes, Ziegler, Latchford, and Bonner took second place in the 400 yard freestyle relay in a surge to edge Salisbury for the third overall position. The finish gave the men 407 total points for the weekend and the third place team finish.
The Green and White turn their attention to next season, where they look to have eight returners including Walthall and Latchford.
