ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The York College men's swimming team captured third place at the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships which came to a close Sunday evening. In total, the Spartans tallied 482.5 points while first-place Mary Washington secured 969 points and runner-up St. Mary's (Md.) recorded 549.
Freshman Cody Latchford put together a quality final day of his rookie campaign as he nabbed fourth-place points in the 200 backstroke. Latchford posted a 1:59.56 effort in the event to collect his best individual finish of the weekend. Notably, the talented freshman swam during the evening finals in each of his first three days of the conference championships. Latchford competed in a trio of relay events, including the third-place 800 freestyle, as well as three individual finals, each of which were top-eight finishes.
Jack Gottschalk finished out his quality Spartan career by notching fifth place in the 1,650 freestyle. The senior swam to a 17:15.20 in the event. Bringing his time with the Green and White to a close, Gottschalk finishes his career as the owner of each of York's three distance freestyle records (500, 1,000, and 1,650).
York collected two more individual top-eight finishes. The first came from Richard Janosky, who had a tremendous senior campaign this year, as he notched a seventh-place 49.30 in the 100 freestyle. Tyler Ziegler, a Spartan who had a great overall showing at the 2012 CAC Championships, also posted seventh-place points, touching the wall at 2:16.44 in the 200 breaststroke. Senior Jamie Hicks collected 10th in the event with a 2:19.36 while Steven Mercer posted a 2:20.21 for 11th overall.
In the 200 backstroke, Andy Woods registered a 2:01.69 in the consolation finals to successfully defend his position and finish ninth overall. Rookie Shane Bonner also recorded a ninth-place mark as he swam to a 48.55 in the 100 freestyle and fellow newcomer Adam Schin netted 10th in the 200 butterfly with a 2:06.90.
Closing out the evening and the competition of the 2012 CAC Championships, the Spartans took fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. Alex Diehl led off the event, his final race for York, while Ziegler, Janosky, and Bonner followed in succession to record a 3:15.30.
The Spartans now bid farewell to their four seniors as Diehl, Gottschalk, Hicks, and Janosky close out their careers. This group has been part of a successful four years of men's swimming at York. During those four seasons, beginning with the 2008-09 campaign, the Spartans have accumulated a tremendous 39-11 mark including a 20-4 record against CAC competition while finishing second as a team at the CAC Championships on three occasions.
