YORK, Pa. - York College men's swimmer Cody Latchford has recently been chosen as the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week, following his outstanding performances in a pair of Spartan meets.
In his first collegiate meet last Friday against Mary Washington and Hood, the Spartan freshman picked up a trio of victories including two individual wins. Latchford led off York's triumphant 200 medley relay squad to an opening win effectively setting the tone for the remainder of the meet. Joined by Jamie Hicks, Andy Woods, and Richard Janosky, the Spartan group swam to a victorious 1:41.30.
Latchford went on to win the 200 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:48.96. He followed up that performance with a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke as he time a 2:03.04.
Aided by Latchford's tremendous swims, the Spartans bested Mary Washington for the first time in their history, handing the Eagles their first in-conference loss since 2000.
On Saturday, Latchford came back with two more individual wins, taking again the 200 free and 200 backstroke events. In the 200 free, he posted a 1:51.66 while registering a 2:05.40 in the 200 back.
Latchford and the Spartans, who have started 3-0 this season, will look to continue their early-season success on Saturday. York welcomes Dickinson, St. Mary's (Md.), and Susquehanna to the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center in a 1:00 pm tilt.
