Spartans Top Frostburg in Senior Day Meet
YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swimming team posted a regular-season-ending 139-50 victory over Capital Athletic Conference foe Frostburg St. on Saturday afternoon in York. With the win, the Spartans, who celebrated Senior Day prior to the meet, improve 11-4 overall on the season while the Bobcats drop to 3-8.
The Spartans opened up their victorious afternoon by going 1-2-3 in the 200 medley relay. Andy Woods, Jamie Hicks, Cody Latchford, and Richard Janosky posted the winning time of 1:42.95 to help the Green and White to their first triumph of the afternoon.
Rolling after that, the York squad officially won the next nine events, beginning with Bryant Hughes' effort in the 1,000 freestyle. Hughes notched a victorious 11:25.98 to grab nine points for the Spartans.
Senior Jack Gottschalk, won the 200 freestyle with a 1:52.76 while Woods posted a winning time of 56.77 in the 100 backstroke. Continuing the triumphs, Hicks registered a 1:04.34 in the 100 breaststroke and Adam Schin collected a 2:17.06 to win the 200 butterfly.
Both the 50 and 100 freestyle events also belonged to York as a pair of rookies took first in both events. Shane Bonner touched the wall first in the 50 with a 22.68 while Latchford's time of 50.21 in the 100 freestyle provided him with the individual victory.
Woods and Hicks also went on secure the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke events with times of 2:10.59 and 2:22.08, respectively.
The Spartans also collected seven official second-place individual finishes. Senior swimmer Alex Diehl posted two of those spots as he tallied the runner-up time in the in the 50 freestyle (22.94) and the 100 freestyle (50.60). Andrew Ward recorded second for York in the 1,000 freestyle (12:08.90) while Tyler Ziegler swam to second in the 200 freestyle with a 1:56.86. Steven Mercer took second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:26.21.
Prior to today's meet, the Spartans recognized their four senior student-athletes as Diehl, Gottschalk, Hicks, and Janosky finish their time with the Green and White. Over the previous four seasons, the Green and White have posted a 39-11 overall record, including 11 wins this season which is York's highest single-season total since at least prior to the 1997-1998 campaign.
With their regular season now complete, the Green and White turn their collective attention squarely to the 2012 CAC Championships. York is set to travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for the league championships set for February 17,18, and 19.
