MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College men's soccer team got back on track with a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference win at Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night in Middletown, PA.
The Spartans, who are 20th in the nation according to the NSCAA and eighth in d3soccer.com, improve to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the CAC. The Lions, in their first season in the CAC, fall to 3-11-1 overall while they are still in search of their first conference win at 0-6.
The Spartans had chances all game long but couldn't find the back of the net in the opening half as the squads went to the break locked in a scoreless tie.
The Green and White finally broke through on their eighth shot of the night when Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) rocketed a long shot that caromed off the left post and into the goal for the game's lone tally in the 58th minute of the game. The goal was unassisted and was Bechard's second goal of the year.
The Spartans continued to apply pressure to the Lion net as they finished the final 20 minutes outshooting their hosts 6-0 with four of those shots coming on goal. However, the Spartans wouldn't find the mark as they settled for the 1-0 win.
York ended the game with a 14-7 edge in total shots including an 8-3 margin in shots on goal. The Green and White also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Brad Schmidt (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) earned his seventh shutout of the year as he recorded three saves for the win, his 14th of the year. Brandon Hoover suffered the loss for the Lions as he allowed the Bechard goal with seven saves in his 90 minutes of work.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they step out of conference play to host Southern Virginia. Game time is set for 3:00 pm and will be preceded by 2013 senior day ceremonies.
