Men's Soccer Win Streak Grows to Seven as Saberton Strikes Again

DOVER, DEL – Sophomore forward Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) provided his York College men's soccer squad with they only goal they would need as the Spartans downed Wesley College 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night.

The Spartans improved to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference while Wesley falls to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3 in the league. York has won seven in a row while the shutout is York's eighth of the year.  The Spartans are ranked second in the poll and eighth in the NSCAA national poll.

The Spartans controlled the game from the start. However, despite the Spartan control of the match, they couldn't find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes of play as the teams went to the break locked in a scoreless tie.

Saberton broke the tie for the Spartans in the 48th minute as he notched the unassisted goal for York. The tally is his fourth of the year, which ties him for the team lead with Jake Hower (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro). The goal is also his third game-winning goal which also ties him with Hower for the team lead.

Junior goalie Brad Schmidt (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) and the Spartan defense would make Saberton's goal stand up. The defense was brilliant in front of Schmidt again as York limited Wesley to just eight total shots in the game including just three shots on goal.

Schmidt finished with his fifth shutout of the year as he recorded three saves. Wesley goalie Mark Mattern recorded eight saves for the Wolverines as he allowed the game's lone goal.

York finished the match with a 19-8 bulge in total shots including a 9-3 margin in shots on goal. The Green and White also had an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.

The win is York's seventh one goal victory of the year, with five of those coming via a 1-0 score.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Arlington, VA to face the Marymount University Saints in a CAC contest. The game is slated for a 1:00 pm kick off.
