Spartans Down Blue Jays on Weaver Winner
BALTIMORE, MD – York College forward Chris Weaver (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) made his final collegiate appearance in his hometown a memorable one as the senior netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, leading his Spartans to a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night.
The Spartans, who are currently ranked 23rd in the nation, improve to 5-1 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 2-3-1 for the campaign.
The Green and White had the better of the play early on as they outshot the Blue Jays 7-4 in the first half. York's best chance in the opening stanza came when Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) drilled the crossbar in the game's 13th minute. However, the ball would bound harmlessly away, keeping the game scoreless.
The Blue Jays had their own near miss in the 66th minute as David Adejumobi hit a header off a corner kick that bounced hard off the turf and caught the crossbar before Spartan goalie Brad Schmidt (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) could corral the loose ball for the save.
The second half was very even with the flow of play going back and forth. With the clock ticking down towards the end of regulation, York got a turnover around midfield and quickly turned the opportunity into a 4-on-3 break opportunity. Daniel Baxter (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) had the ball and flicked it to an onrushing Weaver on the right wing. Weaver rifled a shot across the goalmouth inside the far left post for the game-winning tally. Weaver's goal was his third of the year and first game-winner of the campaign. Weaver now has five game-winning goals for his Spartan career.
Schmidt earned the win as he recorded two saves for the Green and White. Matt Paris suffered the loss as he made five saves. Paris earned the start in place of injured starter Nick Cerrone who missed the game due to injury. Cerrone had posted a 1.06 goals against average and a .839 save percentage in the Blue Jays' previous five contests including a pair of shutouts.
York finished the game outshooting the Blue Jays 14-9 including a 6-2 margin in shots on goal.
York finally returns to Graham Field on Saturday when they host Neumann in a non-conference contest. Kick off is slated for a 2:00 pm start in York.
