Ninth-Ranked Spartans Open Campaign With 1-0 Win
Shots (on goal)
MILLVILLE, PA – The ninth ranked York College men's soccer team scored the game's lone goal in the 17th minute of the game to earn a 1-0 season-opening win over Lycoming College in Millville, PA on Friday night.
The Spartans made the semi-annual trek to Millville High School, home of York head coach Mark Ludwig, and improved to 8-0 all-time on the pitch named after Ludwig's father, Millard C. Ludwig. The Spartans have outscored their various Millville opponents 26-2 and have not allowed a goal in their last seven trips to the north.
The Spartans got the only goal they would need off the foot of senior Jake Hower (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) as he finished off an Austin Johnson (Avalon, N.J./Middle Township) pass 16:31 into the game.
The Warriors bounced back and started to take the play to the Spartans but junior keeper Brad Schmidt (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) kept Lycoming off the board as the Spartans took the 1-0 lead to the break.
York controlled much of the second half play but couldn't push their lead beyond the one goal margin. The Spartans just seemed to barely miss connections in the box, a usual occurrence in the first game of the year.
The Spartans outshot the Warriors 19-10 including 10-4 on goal. York accumulated 12 corners to four for Lycoming.
Schmidt recorded his second shutout in only his second York College start. He faced ten shots and recorded four saves. Lycoming's Connor Keenan played well for the Warriors as he faced 19 shots and recorded nine saves in his 90 minutes of work.
The Spartans have a short turn around as they will host North Carolina Wesleyan in York's home opener. Kick off at Graham Field is set for 2:00 pm.
