YORK, Pa. – Matty Martinez's (Cheltenham, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) 86th-minute set piece strike provided the York College men's soccer team with the only goal they needed Saturday in a 1-0 triumph over visiting St. Mary's (Md.). The victory in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament improves the Spartan record to 12-5-2 on the season while the Seahawks complete their campaign with a 4-13 mark.
Level at 0-0 throughout a vast majority of the contest, the Green and White drew a free kick opportunity in the late in the match. Fouled right outside the penalty area, Martinez lined up the chance just 19 yards from goal. The rookie center back then rifled his attempt past the wall and into the lower right side of the Seahawk net. That strike, first of Martinez's collegiate career, proved the game-winner for the Green and White.
Aside from Martinez's finish, the Green and White had numerous opportunities throughout the match. York totaled 26 shots during the contest, including nine on goal, as they continually pressured the Seahawk defense. One of York's best chances came from Antonio Bua (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) who hammered a well-hit strike in the 63rd minute as he looked to put York up 1-0. Seahawk goalkeeper Austin Brown proved up to the challenge however as he parried away Bua's attempt with an athletic aerial dive to his left.
For the match, Brown made eight saves for the visitors while Spartan netminder Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock) was not forced to make a stop. The shutout is Derksen's fifth personal clean sheet of the 2012 campaign.
The conference-playoff triumph pushes the Spartans into the CAC Semifinals where they are slated to travel to second-seeded Frostburg on Wednesday, October 31. Game time for that match has not been set. Please visit www.ycpspartans.com for updated information.
