YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team closed out their 2012 regular season with a 3-0 win over Manhattanville College on a beautiful late-October Wednesday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 11-5-2 overall while the Valiants fall to 7-6-4.
The opening 15 minutes of the game lacked much energy as both teams spent a majority of the time in the middle of the pitch. The Spartans started to apply more pressure on the Valiant goal as the half progressed. That pressure paid off in the 21st minute as freshman Ryan Donahue (York, Pa./Central York) slid a brilliant pass forward from the midfield. Senior Antonio Bua (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) collected the ball just inside the box and slotted a shot past a diving Willie Silber for his seventh goal of the year.
The Green and White continued to pepper Silber in remaining 20 minutes of the half. York pushed the lead to 2-0 with less than a minute remaining prior to the half. Freshman Eli Bjerk (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) collected the ball along the end line and kept it in play. Bjerk then placed a great pass to an on-rushing Taylor Brummitt (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis). Brummitt tapped the pass into the net as the Spartans built on their lead just before the break.
The second half was a clinical display by the Spartan offense as they maintained a large majority of the possession and kept the play in the Manhattanville defensive third. The Spartans got their third goal in the 56th minute of play as senior Cody Pearson (Crofton, Md./DeMatha Catholic) gathered in a loose ball in the box and unleashed a great strike into the far right netting for his second goal of the year.
The Spartans ended the game with a 21-2 edge in total shots including a 9-1 margin in shots on goal. The Green and White held the Valiants without a second half shot as the Spartan offense gave their defense a break. York notched eight corner kicks while Manhattanville did not attempt any in the contest.
Senior Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock) earned the win in goal for York as he registered one stop in his 65:17 of work. Silber made six saves for the Valiants.
Prior to the game, the Spartans honored their six seniors who closed out their regular season careers. Bua, Pearson, Derksen, Justin Facer (Prospect Heights, Ill./North Allegheny), Matt DeLong (Millville, Pa./Millville), and Nathan Birth (Millville, Pa./Millville) picked up their 58th career win as a class. They head into the CAC Tournament with an on-field four-year mark of 58-14-13.
The Spartans begin their Capital Athletic Conference Tournament journey on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm when they host St. Mary's College in a first round game. The Spartans are the three-time defending conference champions and enter the tournament as the three seed.
