FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College men's soccer team beat Mary Washington 1-0 with a second half goal by senior Cody Pearson (Crofton, Md./DeMatha Catholic) in an important CAC matchup Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles had to play a man down for the majority of the game after a red card was issued on Jake Doyle in the 30th minute of play. The Spartans were not able score in the first half on any of their opportunities.
York was able to take advantage of being a man up in the second half. Pearson nailed the game-winning goal into the net at 46:01. Pearson's first goal of the season proved to be enough for the Spartans to hold on to the victory.
Both teams registered two corner kicks and the Spartans held a 13-5 advantage in total shots for the game.
Senior goalkeeper Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock) recorded his fourth complete shutout with two saves. Eagles goalkeeper Tyler Back had five saves on the day.
With the win the Green and White now stand at 10-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the CAC. The Eagles fall are now 10-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Spartans have secured the third seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament. York will host sixth seeded St. Mary's College on Sunday, October 28 at a game time to be determined.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday at 4:00 pm for their Senior Day game against Manhattanville at Graham Field.
