YORK, Pa. – Taylor Brummitt (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored a late goal to help the York College men's soccer team beat Gettysburg 1-0 in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon.
With the win the Spartans improve to 10-2-1 overall and remain 3-0 in the conference. The loss drops the Bullets to 4-7-1.
The Spartans struggled to finish on their opportunities in the first half. The Green and White had a lot of shots in the beginning of the game but all of them were off the mark.
Junior Matt Yackel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) made a great defensive tackle at the top of the box to shutdown one of the few scoring opportunities the Bullets had.
The Green and White were also able to hold Gettysburg to zero corner kicks in the first half.
The beginning of the second half was filled with a lot of back and forth play between both teams in the midfield. With time winding down the Spartans began to take control on offense. Brummitt burried his sixth goal of the season at 15:29 off a double assist. Jake Hower (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had a header that Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) tapped to Brummitt on the left side of the goal before the Gettysburg goalkeeper could make a save.
York continued to control the pace of the game for the rest of regulation and would hold onto the victory.
The Spartans held a large 19-4 advantage in shots as well as an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock) recorded three saves in his third complete shutout for the Spartans this season. For Gettysburg Connor Darrell finished the game with seven saves.
The Green and White return to action on Saturday against St. Mary's for an important CAC matchup at 2:00 pm.
