Bjerk and Johnson Propel Offense to 6-2 Win at Penn State Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, PA - Freshman Eli Bjerk (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and junior Austin Johnson (Avalon, N.J./Middle Township) each scored twice to lift the #14 York College men's soccer team to a 6-2 non-conference win at Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday evening in Harrisburg. The Spartans improve to 9-2-1 overall for the season. The Lions fall to 6-5 for the campaign.
The Spartans opened the scoring just over 17 minutes into the game as Matt Yackel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) hit a cross that Johnson headed home for his first goal of the year. The Lions wasted little time in tying the match as Justin Henderson tallied an unassisted goal five minutes later as the teams were knotted at one.
York took a lead it wouldn't surrender in the 41st minute as Bjerk scored off a pass from junior Daniel Baxter (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) as the Spartans took a 2-1 advantage. York took that lead to the break as they outshot the Lions 9-4 while they had a 3-0 margin in corner kicks.
Bjerk struck for his second goal of the game as he scored his fourth goal of the year 1:17 into the second half. Bjerk's second goal came off a pass from freshman Matty Martinez (Cheltenham, Pa./Archbishop Ryan).
The Spartans took a 3-1 lead at the 60 minute mark as Johnson scored off a pass from junior Chris Weaver (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley).
The Lions trimmed their deficit to 4-2 when Hakan Demircan scored off an assist from Josh Bitner with 21:46 left in regulation.
York extended the lead to 5-2 when junior James Garrison (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) nailed his first goal of the season. Freshman Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) earned the assist on Garrison's goal.
Baxter finished off the scoring just over a minute after Garrison's goal as he picked up his third goal of the season as Saberton recorded his second assist of the night.
York finished the game holding a 20-5 edge in total shots while they had a 10-4 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
Senior Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock) recorded the win as he notched two saves in his 90 minutes of action. Penn State Harrisburg starter Charles Hyson allowed four goals in his 65:10 of action. He recorded four saves as he was saddled with the loss. Deven Gerhart played the final 24:50 and allowed two goals while he made two saves.
The six goals for the Spartans is a season high while the two goals allowed are also the most they have allowed this season.
York returns home on Saturday to face Marymount University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Kick off from Graham Field is set for 3:00 pm.
