SALISBURY, MD – The record-setting York College men's lacrosse season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the Salisbury Sea Gulls downed the Spartans 12-6 in Salisbury on Saturday. Salisbury used a huge second half to power past the Spartans for a third time on the year including the second time in a week.
The Green and White concludes the year with a mark of 16-5 while the Sea Gulls advance to the third round with a record of 19-1.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Donovan Lange and Knute Kraus notched goals for the hosts in the first six minutes of the game.
Sophomore All-CAC attack Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) got York on the board with his 51st goal of the year at the 5:34 mark. Salisbury's Rhett DePol closed out the first quarter scoring with a goal with 4:10 remaining in the period.
The Spartans tied the game at three with a pair of goals to open the second period. Senior captain Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored his 16th goal of the year. Junior captain Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winter Mills) then notched a man-up goal with 10:10 left in the quarter, tying the game at three.
The two squads would alternate goals for the next five tallies as the Sea Gulls took a 6-5 advantage to the half.
Salisbury scored the first two goals of the second half as they started to slowly pull away from the Green and White. York cut their deficit to 8-6 when Hutson notched his team-leading ninth man-up goal of the year off a pass from Gamble with 2:54 left in the quarter.
Salisbury put the game away in the fourth quarter as they outscored York 4-0 to finish off the win. The Spartans actually outshot the Gulls 9-7 in the period but eight of their shots were off target as they failed to score in the quarter.
DePol and Luke Phipps led the Gulls with four points on two goals and two assists. Lange tallied a team-high three goals while Sean Fitzgerald added a goal and an assist for two points.
Chris Biank led the Gulls with six ground balls while he was 10-for-22 at the X.
Hutson led York with three goals while Gamble added a goal and an assist. Krolus added a goal and two ground balls while Joseph Joseph (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) chipped in with a goal.
Freshman Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) led York with six ground balls as he won 12-of-22 face offs for York.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Spartans 33-32 while York held a 28-25 edge in ground balls. York committed 11 turnovers while Salisbury had seven miscues.
Alex Taylor earned the win as he made five saves in his 60 minutes of work.
York's Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) suffered the loss as he made eight saves in 58:12 of action.
The loss closes out the outstanding careers of seven Spartans. Krolus, James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), Kevin Braun (Chadds Ford, Pa./Saint Mark's), Andrew Taylor (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), Adam Knox (Whiteford, Md./North Harford), James Spillane (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Joey Bellavia (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) finish their careers as the winningest class in school history. They combined to fashion a four-year record of 48-22 while they led the Spartans to a school-record 16 wins as seniors.
