NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Spartan offense struck early and often, tallying five unanswered goals in the first quarter as the No. 16 York College men's lacrosse team rounded out the regular season with a 15-8 victory at Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon.
York (14-3, 6-1 CAC) recorded its 14th victory of the season, setting a new school record for wins in a season, breaking the old record of 13 set last season. The Spartans also set new school records for most points in a season (351) and assists in a season (136). Both records were also set in the 2013 season.
On a day where records fell, junior attacker Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) set a record of his own by tallying a career high five goals, in addition to one assist.
York went on a 5-0 in the first quarter as Davis notched three of his game-high five goals and received two additional goals form Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) and Chris Valera (Easton, Pa. / Easton). Andrew Gamble (Easton Md. / Easton) dished out three assists and James Lowe (Monrovia, Md. / Urbana) handed out one assist on the first quarter goals.
Christopher Newport (10-5, 3-4) opened up the second quarter scoring, but York answered right back with two more goals by Lowe and Davis to take a 7-1 lead into the locker room.
The Spartans and Captains each tallied a pair of goals in the third quarter before man-up goal by Hutson gave York the 3-2 scoring advantage for the quarter. Joseph Joseph (Hollywood, Md. / St. Mary's Annapolis) and Dakota Randall (Manhattan Beach, Ca. / Mira Costa) both got on the score sheet with assists in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Captains out-shot the Spartans, 14-10 and matched the Green and White in goals, 5-5, but none of that played a factor on the outcome as York entered the final quarter with a 10-3 advantage.
Jaimie Lilly (Davidsonville, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) became the sixth Spartan goal scorer in the game with the final two tallies for York as he received helpers from Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) and Christopher Lees (Barto, Pa. / Neshaminy).
Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md. / Falston) picked up the win in net for the Spartans and he improves to 14-3 as he allowed four goals, on 14 shots with 10 saves.
York will enter the CAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will receive a first-round bye. The Spartans will face the winner of the Christopher Newport-Mary Washington game on Saturday, April 26. Game time has yet to be determined.
