YORK, PA – The 18th ranked York College men's lacrosse team avenged one of their 2013 losses in emphatic fashion on Saturday as the Spartans downed Haverford 13-4 in non-conference play in York.
The Spartans improve to 5-1 overall as they have won five straight games. The Fords fall to 0-3 with the loss.
The teams traded goals in the opening five minutes of the game as the two teams got into the rhythm of the game. The Spartans took their first lead of the day when James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored a man up goal off a Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) pass at the 6:04 mark. The final 25 seconds of the quarter featured a pair of goals as Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) scored off a Davis feed with 21 seconds left. Haverford's Jack Bodine took the ensuing face off and scored seven seconds later, cutting the York lead to 3-2 after one quarter of play.
The Spartans took control of the game in the second as Davis and Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) scored in the first four minutes of the quarter, pushing York's lead to 5-3. Haverford's Geoff Geppart temporarily stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 8:29 mark but York closed out the quarter with goals from Hutson and Lowe to push the lead to 7-3 at the intermission.
York poured it on in the third quarter as they ripped off four goals to push the lead to 11-3. The final goal of the quarter came from defender Kevin Braun (Chadds Ford, Pa./Saint Mark's) as the Green and White was clicking on all cylinders. York has outscored their six opponents by a combined margin of 18-5 in the third quarter this year.
Hutson opened the fourth quarter with York's seven consecutive goal before Tav Hafner ended York's run with an unassisted tally with 7:37 left in the game. Hutson closed out the scoring with his fourth goal of the game.
Hutson led the Spartans with his four goals while Lowe and sophomore Joseph Joseph (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each added two. Joseph also had two assists for four points. Senior Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) contributed a goal, an assist, and five ground balls in the win.
Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was outstanding at the X as the freshman won 14-of-18 while he scooped up six ground balls in the win.
Jack Bodine scored twice to lead the Fords' offense.
Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned the win in net as he played 52:17 in cage. He made seven saves and allowed four goals. James Anderson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) recorded one save in 2:38 of work while Christian Koch (Sykesville, Md./Centry) notched two stops in 5:05 of action.
Eric Caliendo went the distance in net for Haverford as he recorded 13 saves during his 60 minutes in the pipes.
York outshot the Fords 43-28 while they also held a 32-23 edge in ground balls. York was 19-of-20 on clears while the Fords went 12-for-19.
The Spartans return to action a week from today when host the University of Mary Washington in York's Capital Athletic Conference opener. First face off from Kinsley Field is set for 3:00 pm.
