YORK, Pa – The visiting #3 Stevenson University Mustangs (14-1, 7-0 CAC) defeated the York College Spartans men's lacrosse team (10-4, 5-2 CAC) 19-3 on a dreary Tuesday afternoon.
The pure power of one of the nation's top teams proved to be more than the Green and White could handle, as Stevenson was led by Neal Barthelme's five-goal day. The Spartan defense faced an astounding 79 shots during the contest, luckily having the reigning Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Tyler Powell between to pipes to record an impressive 27 saves. Despite the final tally, Powell put together an impressive effort in the Spartan goal notching numberous quality stops.
York did a solid job attempting to capitalize on the offensive opportunities they were able to obtain, though a quick-footed Mustang defense was consistently forestalling the team's penetration efforts.
The Green and White were held scoreless through the first half of play, a statistic that is quite unconventional for the 2011 squad. Sophomore James Lowe was able to break the scoring drought with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter on his 28th goal of the year. After senior Adam Cooper fired a shot that was deflected off a Mustang defender's helmet, Lowe was able to corral the loose ball and fake-out the Stevenson goalie for the Spartans' first score.
Following a Mustang rally in which they opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive goals, Powell and his defense were able to contain the Stevenson offensive attack for the final 11:08 of the game.
During that time the Spartans accumulated two goals, the first at the hands of an assisted tally by senior Josh Gamble from freshman Justin Aita. The second saw Gamble dishing the ball to junior John Dubois for York's third and final goal in the last minute of the contest.
The Spartans will close out the regular season on Thursday, April 14, visiting Mary Washington for an important CAC-match. That 4:00 pm league tilt will determine the #3 seed heading into the postseason conference tournament.
