Spartans Roll On; Top St. Mary's 7-4

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – For just the second time in the 12-year history of the program, the York College men's lacrosse team topped St. Mary's (Md.). On a cold and rainy day in St. Mary's City, Md., the Spartans captured the Capital Athletic Conference tilt with a 7-4 triumph. With the victory, the Green and White boost their season mark to 8-2, including a string of four straight wins, while they remain unbeaten in league play at 4-0. The Seahawks, having played an exceptionally difficult schedule this year, drop to 2-6 and 1-2 in the CAC.

James Lowe led the Spartans with four points as he scored three goals and added one assist. The sophomore attack has been on fire as of late, having also tallied six scores and one helper against Marymount (Va.) last Saturday.

Lowe put York ahead early in the first quarter, a lead the visitors would not surrender, as he notched his 20th goal of the season just 1:51 into the game. Just 6:19 later, Lowe stretched that lead to 2-0 by finishing off a Jimmy Langton assist.

Josh Gamble, York's all-time leader in points, then gave the Green and White a three-goal advantage as he found the back of the net with 3:07 remaining in the opening quarter.

After St. Mary's Patrick Mull tallied late in the first frame, the Spartans found themselves leading 3-1 after one.

Both squads netted one goal in each of the next two quarters, including Spartan tallies from Adam Cooper and Andrew Taylor. Taylor's goal, the first goal of his college career, came off an assist from John Dubois with 3:46 to play in the third stanza.

Leading 5-3 entering the fourth, Lowe struck again for the Green and White. With 13:24 to play, the sophomore posted his third tally of the contest to give York some added cushion at 6-3.

With 7:55 remaining, Langton registered his 21st goal of the season as Lowe returned the earlier favor by posting his fifth helper of the season.

From there, the Spartans put forth a solid defensive effort, holding the Seahawks to a mere three shots over the final 7:55 of play. St. Mary's did manage to score during that span, but Dennis Rosson's tally came with no time remaining on the clock to bring the final count to 7-4.

Spartan goalkeeper Tyler Powell, who was recently named both the CAC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week and the Spartan Athlete of the Week, continued his string of outstanding performances. Against the Seahawks, the junior netminder recorded 14 stops to secure his tenth win of the season.

John Dubois and Jason Underwood also put in strong showings for the Spartan side. Dubois was 6-for-11 in face-offs while grabbing a team-high four ground balls and also dishing out one assist. Underwood posted a trio of ground balls while also causing two Seahawk turnovers.

The Spartans now turn their attention to Saturday's CAC contest with Wesley. York is slated to host the Wolverines at Kinsley Field in a 3:00 pm tilt.
