CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Jimmy Langton tallied five goals and Tyler Powell recorded 15 saves as the York College men's lacrosse team posted an 11-6 win over Washington College Wednesday afternoon in Chestertown, Md. With the non-conference triumph, the Spartans begin the year at 4-0, their best start in program history, while the Shoremen drop to 1-2 on the season.
Langton came up huge for the Green and White on the offensive end as he netted a season-high five tallies. All five of Langton's goals came during the first three quarters and proved significant as there were at most two goals separating the squads on the scoreboard prior to each of his tallies. Transferring into the Spartan program this season, Langton has provided an immediate spark for York having already registered 12 goals and three assists on the season.
Defensively, Powell had yet another fantastic performance in just his first year in the Spartan net. Another transfer to York, Powell turned away 15 shots over his 60 minutes of play, while not allowing a single Shoremen goal in either the second or fourth quarters.
After a 2-2 first quarter, the Spartans turned in a great second frame as they outscored Washington 4-0. B.J. Blaker got the Green and White rolling in that second quarter scoring his first of the day, courtesy of a Seth Krolus assist, with 11:43 left on the clock. Langton later followed that tally with his third goal of the afternoon with 7:23 showing and just 14 seconds later James Lowe notched another tally to bring York's lead to 5-2. Lowe then assisted on the Spartans' final goal of the half as Josh Gamble scored with 59 seconds to go, giving the Green and White a 6-2 advantage heading into the break.
The third quarter was packed with goals as York notched three goals while the Shoremen found the back of the net four times. Washington came to within two goals on three separate occasions but that would be as close as the Spartans would allow. With the score at 8-6, Jason Underwood finished an Adam Cooper assist with just 2:02 to play in the third, stretching York's lead to three.
Carrying that 9-6 lead into the fourth, York proved the only squad to score in the final quarter – with goals courtesy of Blaker and Gamble – but needed a strong defensive effort to keep Washington off the board.
In the fourth, Powell came up with eight saves as he was peppered with 13 shots in the quarter. The Spartans also caused three turnovers, including one by Powell, while collecting nine ground balls over the final 15 minutes.
On the day, York outshot their hosts 38-33, including 12-4 in the second quarter, while the squads split the face-offs at ten each. Corey Cooke provided most of York's face-off triumphs as he went 9-for-16 against the Shoremen. Notably, the Green and White had seven players record assists on the afternoon including Gamble, Lowe, and Underwood who scored and dished out a helper.
The Spartans will look to continue their current streak on Saturday, March 12, as they host visiting Messiah. The opening face-off is slated for 1:00 pm from York's Kinsley Field.
